Chopper Crashes in Quake Zone

Tehran - The governor of mountainous Qazvin province and at least five other people were killed on Saturday as their helicopter crashed during an inspection of an earthquake-hit zone north of Tehran, Iranian media said. The state news agency IRNA said the governor, Massud Emami, and the provincial police chief, an aide to the governor, the pilot and two other passengers all died. According to the student news agency ISNA, two journalists on the flight were also killed. The helicopter was headed for Alamout to inspect the damage from Friday's killer quake, state television said. There was no immediate word on the cause of the air crash. At least 25 people were killed and 400 injured when the quake jolted a wide mountainous area north of Tehran, according to state media. Hundreds more people were left injured or homeless in a string of villages in the Alborz mountain range in Qazvin and the neighbouring province of Mazandaran. Via News24.

Latest Reuters Report: At Least 20 Killed in Northern Iran

QAZVIN, Iran (Reuters) - A powerful earthquake struck the Alborz mountain chain in northern Iran, killing at least 20 people and damaging scores of villages, officials said. The quake, which the U.S. Geological Survey said measured 6.2 on the Richter scale, also shook the capital Tehran on Friday, sending some startled residents running into the streets. Some windows were broken. Details on casualties and damage were thin, but officials in the quake-prone Islamic Republic played down fears of a heavy death toll in the lush region on the Caspian Sea coast that is famed for its exports of caviar. Qazvin province governor Massoud Emami said about 80 villages in his area suffered damage of 20 to 100 percent in the quake, which occurred five months after more than 20,000 people were killed by a quake that hit the southeastern city of Bam.
